My Experience as Volunteer Bailiff of the AIAC Virtual Pre-Moot 2021

During the long semester break, I apply for the volunteer position of the AIAC Virtual Pre-Moot 2021 and thank God that I have secured the position. This is my first ever experience to be a bailiff in a moot competition. We take about 3 weeks to practice to be an excellent bailiff because we will be the person that handle the whole hearing room.

Do you know what makes a good bailiff? First, always SMILE at the same time remain professional. As a bailiff, it is important to be approachable so that the high-profile arbitrators and participants would have good impression of AIAC Virtual Pre-Moot and yourself.

Besides, stay calm when problem arose. Indeed, there are times where arbitrators and participants did not appear in the hearing room on time. We have a monitor system spreadsheet to ease the job of arbitrators and participants division. Thus, we must make sure we mark it red when the arbitrators or participants are not in the hearing room. Besides, we need to inform the person-in-charge. In the process when the time is around the clock. I had learnt that we should be patient and trust our colleagues. After the problem resolved, remember to thank your colleagues so that we can bring positive atmosphere between colleagues.

Through this experience, I had learnt the way to maintain my composure and my communication skill has indeed increased. Besides, I have expose to different style of mooting and learn the mooting skill from different mooters. Furthermore, I had also learnt from the feedback given by arbitrators to mooters.

In overall, it is an interesting and thrilling experience for me because I have met so many talented people (my LinkedIn connection also doubled). I am grateful for this wonderful adventure!
